Home runs by Stanton and Soto in ALCS Game 4

play

A two-pitch blip or a long, epic streak about to unfold?

That’s a question the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians may be asking themselves after the Guardians came just one hit away from falling into a 3-0 deficit in this American League Championship Series. But Jhonkensy Noel’s tight, game-winning home run, followed by David Fry’s walk-off shot an inning later, breathes life into this ALCS.

Cleveland’s 7-5 win at Progressive Field cut New York’s lead in this ALCS to 2-1, but the Yankees can once again grab a commanding advantage in Game 4 on Friday night.

Luis Gil will make his first career postseason start against Cleveland’s Gavin Williams.

Game 5 is Saturday night at 8:08 ET at Progressive Field.

Giancarlo Stanton dispelled any thoughts of a riot in Cleveland in one fell swoop.

The New York Yankees slugger’s fantastic postseason continued in impressive fashion on Friday when he hit a three-run home run off Guardians reliever Cade Smith to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning of Game 4 .

With the Yankees clinging to a 3-2 lead and the Guardians reviving their Game 3-winning heroics, Stephen Vogt struck out the dominant Smith to score the sixth. But he gave Juan Soto a leadoff walk, and Aaron Judge sank a fastball on the first pitch for a single that came off the bat at 112 mph.

After a rare sacrifice from a cleanup hitter, Jazz Chisholm and Stanton fired a 1-2 fastball 404 feet into the left field stands for a 6-2 lead.

The Yankees are just 12 outs away from taking a 3-1 ALCS lead.

The New York Yankees have a narrow lead — 3-2 over the Cleveland Guardians through four innings of ALCS Game 4. But they have the upper hand in other ways, too.

Starter Luis Gil weathered a significant amount of traffic to last four innings and delivered his first error-free frame of the night in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, the Guardians had to reach into their bullpen in the third inning, with starter Gavin Williams replaced by lefty starter Erik Sabrowski to ensure that Juan Soto – who previously hit a home run – didn’t get another look at the righty starter.

As the fifth inning begins, the Guardians are down to their third pitcher, Eli Morgan. Gil is still there – although the top of Cleveland’s roster may not be for long.

With two outs early in the second, Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit a solo home run to center field against Cleveland starter Gavin Williams, extending New York’s lead to 3-1.

There is virtually no way the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees can top their pulsating Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. But Game 4 began exactly as the previous one ended: with a two-run home run.

Juan Soto drilled his second home run of the Series, a 414-footer off the Guardians’ leadoff Gavin Williams, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead after one inning Friday.

Williams, making his first start in 19 days, immediately ran into trouble, giving up a single to the red-hot Gleyber Torres before finding Soto, who hammered a 98 mph fastball into the right field stands at Progressive Field.

But Yankees starter Luis Gil, like Williams for the first time since September, returned half of it. He walked leadoff batter Steven Kwan and allowed a double to Kyle Manzardo. But Gil would only accept a sacrifice throw from Jose Ramirez to maintain the Yankees’ lead.
