Home Depot forces company employees to work shifts in stores

It’s no secret that retail workers are under significant stress.

With problems ranging from understaffed stores to long hours to rude customer behavior, it’s no wonder some companies are finding it necessary to focus on new employee retention methods.

To “stay connected to the core of its business,” Home Depot will begin requiring its corporate employees to work shifts at its retail stores.

Citing a memo from Home Depot CEO Ted Decker: Bloomberg has reported that starting in the 4th quarter, the company’s employees will be required to work an 8-hour shift each quarter.

Aimed at supporting retail staff, Decker says the move will allow employees to “truly understand the challenges and opportunities our store associates face every day.” The move applies to everyone, including senior management and remote employees.

Bloomberg called the effort “unusual” for the industry and noted that Home Depot is feeling the pressure of increasing labor activism. Additionally, the company experienced a decline in sales due to high consumer investment in home renovations during the pandemic.

Home Depot is one of the largest retailers in the United States, with annual sales of over $150 billion and 450,000 employees.
