The upcoming Android phone will have two features that virtually no other Android device offers so far: HMD brings magnetic wireless charging and a way to quickly repair a phone.

We were promised that phones would be easier to repair, and we were also promised that the magnetic wireless charging found on iPhones would be available on more non-Apple devices. As of August, both are finally available, but not on a phone you might expect.

High-end features like these are usually found on high-end phones. But not this year, it seems.

Repairability has so far only been available on low- to mid-range phones, while Qi2 magnetic wireless charging has only just arrived on the iPhone 15 lineup, making it unavailable on the two big Android phones for 2024. Crazy.

Perhaps even crazier is that both features are now available, with HMD announcing the “Skyline,” a 6.55-inch phone with an OLED display in an aluminum body with a glass back. It’s a bit more premium than we’re used to from HMD, although the specs suggest the Skyline is aimed at the mid-range.

Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage and Android 14.

Where things get really interesting are the cameras and feature set, which includes a 108-megapixel main wide-angle camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, plus an additional 50-megapixel camera for close-ups. Three cameras on the back plus a 50-megapixel camera on the front for relatively high-resolution selfies.

Then there are the little extras you might not expect, including Qi2, the magnetic wireless charging technology that has a lot in common with Apple’s MagSafe and not only helps magnetically attach a phone to a charger, but also enables support for magnetic accessories.

So far, no Android has integrated Qi2. Neither the flagship Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, nor the foldable flagship Moto Razr 50 Ultra, nor Google’s equally flagship Pixel 9 Pro XL. So far, HMD is the only provider of a Qi2-capable phone, and that is surprising.

It comes with a 4600mAh battery that lasts up to two days and is also replaceable thanks to the HMD Skyline’s self-repairing design. This is similar to HMD’s self-repairing Nokia devices, where iFixit sells kits that let you replace charging ports, batteries, and other parts.

HMD will also be adding a Digital Detox mode to its Skyline phone later in the year, probably in September. This feature will essentially block social notifications until you turn them off, while Android is being designed to let you see less.

Just as it sounds, Digital Detox mode is a compromise between keeping your regular phone and switching to something intentionally simple, making the mobile experience less dominated by everything so you can enjoy life in the moments.

In Australia, the HMD Skyline will retail for $899 and will be available from Amazon, Big W, Harvey Norman, JB HiFi and Officeworks from August 28.
