Historic covered bridge closed after truck crashed through, leaving gaping hole

A historic covered bridge in Maine is closed after an “overweight dump truck” crashed through, leaving a gaping hole, officials said.

It happened on Friday afternoon on the Babb’s Bridge between Gorham and Windham, the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) announced on Facebook. The bridge is expected to remain closed for months, according to a press release.

Gorham Police posted photos of the accident scene on Facebook to urge the public to take an alternate route.

“The heavy weight of the vehicle caused the wooden floor of the bridge structure to give way,” the Facebook post said.

“The cost of repairing the bridge should be paid by the driver. It is not designed for large commercial vehicles,” commented one Facebook user on the police post.

MaineDOT says the bridge, which is the oldest in the state – it was originally built in 1840 – has a three-ton weight limit. Police said the dump truck was loaded with gravel, which is why MaineDOT estimated the truck that caused the damage was likely “several times over the posted weight limit.”

It was determined that the truck entered the bridge from the Gorham side before falling through the first slab of the bridge deck into the river below.

Babb’s Bridge is a single-lane, state-owned structure that spans the Presumpscot River. According to MaineDOT, about 360 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

The bridge has seen a lot. After it was burned down by vandals in 1973, Maine Department of Transportation workers built an exact replica that opened in 1976. In 2014, vandals struck again, punching holes in the bridge’s roof. In 2015, the bridge was damaged by a snow plow.

The bridge is inspected by state agencies at least every two years. The most recent inspection was late last month, MaineDOT said. The three-ton weight limit was placed on the bridge in 1983 and has not been changed since.

The truck driver was identified as Joshua Polewarzyk, 37, of Limington. He was driving a Ford F750, local television station WMTW reported. He was able to get out of the truck and suffered minor injuries. When the truck was pulled from the river, the logo of an asphalt construction company called The Driveway Guys was discovered on its side.

“The last time this bridge was damaged, they considered closing it to vehicles and allowing only pedestrian traffic,” wrote one resident under the police post. “I hope this agenda is not pushed again. It’s about a mile from my house and I walk that route about 60% of the time.”
