HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: PAS hires Kallevig for work in the trenches

The Pipestone Area The school district officially hired Sean Kallevig at its regularly scheduled board meeting in May.

In the classroom, Kallevig will serve as a lecturer in world history, psychology and sociology.

In addition, Kallevig offers the Arrows a flexible coach for three different sports: football, wrestling and baseball.

“He’s gained a lot of experience over the last seven years at Adrian,” said Scott Booomgaarden, head coach of the PAS football team and dean of students. “He’s a knowledgeable guy. He’s good with the kids and I’m excited to have him on the team.”

In football, Kallevig will take on a role on the ninth grade team and as defensive coordinator for the junior team.

Boomgaarden also reported that Kallevig will spend time training both the attack and defense lines.

“It’s a bigger program and a bigger school,” Kallevig said of his attraction to PAS. “I’ve always respected the program and thought I would be comfortable there.”

Kallevig said he’s enjoying learning a new system and working with new players. Thanks to coordinator Andy Yost, the Arrows will be running a new offense this year.

PAS head wrestling coach Paul Young said Kallevig, who helped out at the Little Arrow camp in July, will work with Scott Sterud in the ninth-grade league.

It has also been suggested that Kallevig will take on a coaching role in baseball this spring, but nothing concrete has been set in stone.

During the 2023-24 season at Adrian-Ellsworth, Kallevig was involved in some of the Dragon’s successes.

The football team went 7-3 before being eliminated 40-14 by Sleepy Eye in the Section 3A semifinals on Oct. 28, 2023. Heavyweight wrestler Jaren Winselman was the sectional champion and 121-pounder Moe Erdman was the runner-up here in Pipestone on Feb. 24. The baseball team finished 11-13 and defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 4-2 before being eliminated by Lac qui Parle Valley in a 3-2 thriller on June 4.

While at Adrian Ellsworth School, Kallevig directed Adrian’s summer program, served on the leadership team, and taught history at both the middle and high school levels.

Kallevig, who graduated from East Ridge High School in Woodbury in 2012, played primarily on the offensive line for the Raptors, wrestled at heavyweight and played baseball in the city league.

After high school, Kallevig received his bachelor’s degree in history from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. While there, he played rugby.

Another factor in his decision to take a job in Pipestone was proximity, Kallevig said.

He lives in nearby Edgerton, where his wife, Kayla Kallevig, teaches third grade and coaches the Flying Dutch middle school volleyball and softball teams. The couple has three children, six-year-old Lincoln, three-year-old Blayke and five-month-old Mayssa.
