Here are 5 events in Oklahoma we want to see

play

The International Olympic Committee has already selected five sports to be added to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. One of those sports, softball, will be played here at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.

But what if Oklahomans had the opportunity to add another sport to the list of events? Oklahomans’ culture could make the Olympics that much more interesting.

Here’s a look at five quintessentially Oklahoman activities that we think could be great Olympic sports:

Pasta

The strange, wild and blatantly Oklahoma-based sport of “noodling,” in which anglers reach into murky shallows with their bare hands to pull out giant catfish, is already an international phenomenon.

At least it is appreciated internationally.

At this year’s Okie Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, two Japanese adventurers headed to Oklahoma in the hope of catching the underwater beasts.

Stickball

Stickball has been played by indigenous peoples for centuries. In fact, it is the predecessor of a modern Olympic sport: lacrosse.

Many Oklahoma tribes, including the Cherokee, Choctaw and Chickasaw, still maintain the sport as part of their heritage.

After a 120-year absence, lacrosse will return as a competitive discipline at the 2028 Olympic Games.

rodeo

It makes sense that rodeo is on this list, right? The rodeo industry has taken steps to become more professional in recent years.

While many rodeo events have been primarily individual sports, Professional Bull Riders launched its team series in 2022. One of those teams, the Oklahoma Wildcatters, is currently ranked second in the standings.

So where there is a professional sport, there must be amateurs. College rodeo teams are becoming increasingly popular and could serve as suppliers for any international Olympic rodeo competition.

Cornhole

While cornhole isn’t necessarily an Oklahoma-only phenomenon, it has taken over the state due to its casual yet competitive nature. The game involves two teams throwing beanbags at a target from a distance.

Call it redneck curling.

Although it is primarily played at outdoor parties with beer and barbecue, several competitive leagues have formed. The Oklahoma Cornhole 2024 State Championship will be held August 16-18 in McAlester.

Wakeboarding in tow (in a flooded ditch)

It’s not a real sport, but when Oklahoma vlogger Dylan Young did it, it sure looked fun.

And it’s definitely typical for Oklahoma.
