Heavy rain and gusty winds expected in Chicago area on Election Day – NBC Chicago

For voters heading to the polls on Election Day, it might be a good idea to bring an umbrella as humid conditions and gusty winds continue to prevail across much of the Chicago area.

Persistent rain throughout the day will be accompanied by strong and gusty southerly winds, with gusts up to 40 mph in Chicago and northern counties – and even stronger gusts elsewhere. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Grundy, Kankakee, Southern Cook and Will counties in Illinois and Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana, warning of gusts up to 45 mph from 6 in the morning until tomorrow Tuesday, 3 p.m.

The NWS said gusty winds could blow around unsecured properties, tree limbs could be downed and some power outages could occur. Low temperatures will be unseasonably warm for this time of year as southwesterly winds blow in mild air, causing only a slight drop in temperatures to the low 60s.

The heaviest rain will occur before the strongest winds arrive. Widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms of 2.5 to 5 cm are expected to occur across most of the area during the overnight hours, with the heaviest rain likely around midnight.

Some areas could experience heavy rainfall, resulting in localized flooding, the NWS said. According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack, there will be more rain at times during the day – with less intensity than overnight – before tapering off late in the afternoon.

Ultimately, local rainfall amounts of between 5 and 12 centimeters are possible, according to meteorologists. Heavy rains could flood roads, low-lying areas and fields and cause rapid rises in streams and creeks, the NWS said.

Once Tuesday is in the books, everything should be a lot quieter; Clear conditions and sunshine will peak on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and part of Saturday.

It won’t be as warm, however, as temperatures will be slightly cooler in the upper 50s than the upper 60s on Tuesday. Despite the cooler weather, it will still be warmer than usual for this time of year, Sack said.
