Heatwave continues during the working week

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Saturday was dry and hot with plenty of sunshine! The official high temperature in CVG was 91° after a low of 62° in the morning.

Sunday morning will start with temperatures around 18 degrees, slightly warmer than the mornings. It will be another sunny day with maximum temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees. Humidity will be a little higher, but bearable.

We begin the last week of August hot and humid in the Ohio Valley region with lows Monday morning between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit and afternoon highs in the 95 and 97 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be hot and humid, with morning lows between 70 and 77 degrees and afternoon highs between 90 and 95 degrees. The difference from Monday is that these days will be humid, resulting in heat index values, or feels like temperatures, between 95 and 100 degrees. If you’re outdoors on these days, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, cool down, and take frequent breaks. Don’t forget to check on your family, friends, neighbors, and pets, too!

The last days of August will also bring a chance of rain and storms starting Tuesday through the start of Labor Day weekend. Expect more dry weather than wet weather during this period, so keep your outdoor plans! However, a storm that develops could bring heavy downpours and strong, gusty winds; so indoor options may not be a bad idea, especially for Wednesday and Friday.

It’s too early for specifics, but attention should be on the heat now, as rain chances are not high right now. It should be noted that as of Saturday evening, there are no longer any serious threats north of the tri-state region, but if anything changes, we’ll let you know first.

Labor Day weekend begins next Friday, marking the unofficial end of summer. Temperatures on Friday will still be above normal, with highs in the 80s and 90s, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Drier conditions are favorable for Saturday and Sunday, but temperatures will still be around 80s. Labor Day on Monday will be mild, with highs only around 80s.

Temperatures are expected to become milder during the first full week of September, with morning lows above 10 degrees and highs above 25 degrees. Rain is expected starting in the middle of next week. Any rain is welcome, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be enough to break the drought in the tri-state area.

The U.S. Drought Monitor is reporting conditions along I-71 and in Northern Kentucky as unusually dry. These locations experienced moderate drought last week, so some areas are showing signs of improvement. However, conditions have worsened in the easternmost parts of FOX19 NOW’s coverage area. Northern Adams and much of Highland counties are experiencing severe to extreme drought. The outlook is not favorable for improvement, but we will continue to monitor the situation and be the first to let you know when there is good news for the people, animals and livelihoods affected.
