Head-on collision leads to closure of a section of Highway 40 near Amherst

AMHERST, Nebraska (KSNB) – The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a head-on collision Friday morning on Highway 40 west of Amherst.

The accident occurred shortly after 7:20 a.m. A section of the highway where the accident occurred is still closed, but emergency services are still on site.

According to initial investigations, two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided on Highway 40.

The sheriff’s office said both drivers were taken from the scene to CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

In the press release, the BCSO stated that as of 9 a.m., the identities of the drivers had not been confirmed and authorities were conducting an active investigation at the scene of the accident.

Officers were assisted at the scene by members of the Kearney Police Department, the Kearney/Buffalo County Fatality Accident Investigation (FAIT) team, the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department, CHI GSH paramedics, the Nebraska State Highway Department and the Buffalo County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
