Harvey Weinstein is hospitalized for emergency heart surgery

Harvey Weinstein was taken from Rikers Island, where he is being held, to Bellevue Hospital for emergency heart surgery after experiencing chest pains, his representatives told ABC News.

“Mr. Weinstein was admitted to Bellevue Hospital last night for a variety of ailments,” Weinstein representatives Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer said in a statement. “We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein had a heart procedure and surgery today, but cannot comment further.”

They continued: “As we have previously detailed, Mr. Weinstein suffers from a variety of serious health issues that require ongoing treatment. We are grateful to the leadership team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for moving him to Bellevue Hospital so quickly.”

The emergency comes as Weinstein, 72, is due to appear in court in New York this week, where prosecutors will present evidence to a grand jury in an effort to seek new sex crimes charges against Weinstein.

Weinstein denies any wrongdoing and says his sexual encounters with women were consensual.

Weinstein recently appeared in court in a wheelchair and asked to remain in Rikers custody, where he is receiving medical care.

In a shocking move, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction for sex crimes against three women in a devastating 4-3 decision in April this year, finding that the trial judge “wrongly admitted testimony about uncharged, alleged prior sexual conduct with persons other than the plaintiffs in the underlying crimes.”

The court stated that the statement “served no substantial non-bias-related purpose” and “portrayed the defendant in a highly prejudicial light.”

However, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has now presented evidence to a grand jury that could lead to new charges against Weinstein. The allegation: It is said to have occurred sometime between late 2005 and mid-2006 in a Lower Manhattan apartment building, according to the transcript of an unannounced court hearing last week.

During a hearing on September 3, prosecutors also said they were aware of two other possible crimes: a sexual assault in May 2016 at a Tribeca hotel and a possible sexual assault that took place at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.

This is not the first time Weinstein has been hospitalized recently. In July, he was transferred to Bellevue after testing positive for COVID-19 and double pneumonia, according to his Rothfeld.
