Harris tells Fox News she is not a “continuation” of Biden’s presidency

Vice President Kamala Harris sought to distance herself from President Joe Biden in her interview with Fox News on Wednesday as she pushed back against criticism that there would be no difference between her incoming administration and Biden’s.

“My presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency,” Harris told Fox News host Bret Baier. “And like every new president who takes office, I will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences and fresh and new ideas. I represent a new generation of leaders.”

Harris has faced criticism from the right for saying in recent media appearances that she has done nothing different than Biden over the past four years and for a lack of details about how her presidency might differ from Biden’s. Donald Trump in particular has focused on Harris’ comments, portraying them as a mere extension of Biden’s administration.

Rather than distancing herself from the president, Harris often portrays herself as the antithesis of Trump, instead drawing a contrast between her and her Republican rival. When asked on Wednesday how, after four years as As vice president, she would represent “a new path forward” — her campaign slogan — Harris drew attention to Trump.

First, by putting behind us the last decade in which we were burdened by the kind of rhetoric from Donald Trump that was designed and implemented to divide our country,” she told Baier.

Harris’ Fox News interview was a calculated risk to win over conservatives who don’t want to vote for Trump but might be unsure about her. Her meeting with a conservative media outlet for a combative interview also highlights another difference between her and Trump, who prefers friendly media shows and has pulled out of several mainstream media interviews in recent weeks.
