Harris supports the abolition of the tip tax, promoting a policy first proposed by Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris has come out in favor of eliminating the tax on tips for hospitality and service sector workers, a measure first proposed by former President Donald Trump.

Harris’ endorsement comes ahead of the unveiling of an economic plan this week and as the vice president seeks to mobilize the support of the large coalition of service sector workers in the key swing state of Nevada.

Speaking to thousands of people at a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, including members of a local food service workers union, Harris pledged to push policies that would benefit working families, citing the elimination of the tip tax as an example.

“I promise everyone here that when I am president, we will continue our fight for America’s working families. That includes raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tax on tips for service and restaurant workers,” she said.

Trump, who first proposed the idea at his own campaign rally in Las Vegas in June, accused Harris of copying him.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ is coming to an end and who is slowly plummeting in the polls, simply copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS policy,” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social. The difference is she won’t do it, she just wants to do it for political reasons! This was TRUMP’s idea – she has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala proposed the BIGGEST TAX HIKE IN HISTORY – it won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

After Trump’s proposal in June, Ted Pappageorge, treasurer of Culinary Union Local 226, walked back his promise: “Tip earners definitely need help. Nevada workers are smart enough to distinguish between real solutions and wild campaign promises from a convicted felon.”

Harris acknowledged union members who attended the rally on Saturday, a day after Culinary Union Local 226 officially endorsed Harris.

The proposal is one of Harris’ first notable proposals since she rose to the top of the Democratic ticket last month. Speaking to reporters in Arizona on Saturday, Harris said she plans to unveil her policy platform this week, which will focus on “what we need to do to reduce costs while strengthening the economy.”

The Harris team explained its support for eliminating the tip tax for hospitality and service industry workers, saying in a statement that it would “work with Congress on a proposal” that would set income limits and include fraud prevention measures.

A Harris campaign official said her plan to eliminate the tip tax would be accompanied by a call for Congress to raise the minimum wage.

“On Saturday, Vice President Harris said she would push for the elimination of the tip tax as president,” the official said in a statement. “The proposal would require legislation. As president, she would work with Congress to craft a proposal that includes an income limit and strict requirements to prevent hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation in ways that seek to profit from the scheme.”

“Vice President Harris would support the proposal alongside a minimum wage increase,” she continued.
