Harris ‘copies’ Trump’s tax avoidance policy on Nevada tips

Vice President Kamala Harris promised to eliminate the tip tax during a campaign appearance in Las Vegas on Saturday – prompting former President Donald Trump to criticize her for “copying” one of his key proposals.

Although she spent a significant portion of her speech sharply attacking Trump, the Democratic presidential candidate reiterated one of his most striking ideas at the beginning of her campaign speech in the swing state.

“I promise everyone here that when I am president, we will continue our fight for America’s working families, including by raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tax on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris told the crowd to thunderous applause.

Trump, who had been promoting this idea since before Harris entered the race, immediately accused the former California prosecutor of pandering to people in Nevada, which has one of the highest concentrations of tipped workers.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ is coming to an end and who is slowly plummeting in the polls, simply copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS policy,” the Republican presidential candidate wrote on Truth Social.

“The difference is she won’t do it, she just wants to do it for political reasons! This was TRUMP’s idea – she has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”

The former president first publicly presented the proposal during his own campaign tour in Nevada in June – before Harris replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket.

Trump later said he was briefed on the measure during his campaign after meeting a waitress in Nevada who had lost a large portion of her tips to taxes.

Harris apparently disagreed with the idea that Trump would keep that promise, accusing him of serving only the richest Americans.

“If Donald Trump is elected, he wants to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. He wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, and he wants to abandon our fight against the climate crisis,” Harris said.

Her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, expressed the same view in his speech: “(Trump will) manipulate the economy so that the middle class gets nothing and the rich get richer.”

Although they liked the idea of not taxing tips, even Harris and Walz’s team admitted that the vice president had copied them.

“Sounds positive. I mean, it’s the same thing Trump said, right?” evaluator Tammy Campa, who earlier in her career worked as Bussey at Circus Circus, told The Post.

Others in the audience expressed more confidence that the vice president would keep his promise not to tax tips.

The visit is the last stop in a series of visits by the Democrats to the swing states.

In his own speech, Walz expressed the same opinion as Harris: “(Trump will) manipulate the economy so that the middle class gets nothing and the rich get richer.” Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock

Last week, Harris and Walz visited Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, followed by Arizona and Nevada on Friday – five states that could be crucial to a victory in November.

In 2020, President Biden narrowly defeated Republican Donald Trump in Nevada by 2.4 percentage points.

The rally in Las Vegas came on the heels of support from the Culinary Union, Nevada’s largest labor union.
