Harris campaign spotlights Trump’s attack on Detroit in new ad

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign plans to air a new TV ad this weekend that highlights a negative remark made by former Republican President Donald Trump about Detroit as he spoke in the city on Thursday.

The Harris campaign created the ad, which features the voice of Detroit actor Courtney B. Vance, less than 24 hours after Trump finished speaking at the Detroit Economic Club.

According to the Democratic candidate’s campaign, the spot will air during broadcasts of the Detroit Tigers’ playoff game against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday and the Detroit Lions’ game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

At one point in his speech Thursday, Trump told the crowd at the MotorCity Casino Hotel that if Harris wins the presidency this fall, “our whole country will end up like Detroit.”

“You’re going to have a mess on your hands,” Trump said.

The new one-minute ad features images of Detroit and actor Vance saying Trump knows “nothing” about revitalizing the city.

“We are a city of winners,” Vance says in the commercial. “From newcomers. From contractors. The Motor City, bigger and better. Here we believe in freedom. We bow to no one and never will.”

The narrator then adds that when Trump says, “Our whole country is going to end up like Detroit if she’s your president,” Trump doesn’t understand “that he should be so damn lucky.”

Detroit is Michigan’s largest city and a Democratic stronghold. In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden received 94% of the vote against Trump in Detroit. However, Republicans and Trump have tried to limit Democratic support in the city this fall.

Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, spoke at an event at Eastern Market in Detroit on Tuesday. Trump then visited Detroit on Thursday to address the Detroit Economic Club to discuss his plans for the future of the auto industry.

After his speech and negative comment about Detroit, Trump campaign spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita in Michigan said Trump “remembers the time when Detroit was hailed as the gold standard for auto manufacturing success and revolutionized the industry.”

“President Trump emphasized in his speech that his policies will usher in a new era of economic success and stability for Detroit and help the city reach its full potential,” LaCivita said.

Harris will return to the Michigan campaign trail on Tuesday for a radio town hall event in Detroit on Charlamagne Tha God’s radio show The Breakfast Club.

First lady Jill Biden will campaign for Harris in Oakland County on Monday, the Harris campaign said Friday.
