Happy Dhanteras 2024: Date, Time, Puja Vidhi, Mantra and Shubh Muharat to buy gold, silver and auspicious items

Dhanteras has a profound significance in the five-day Diwali festival in India. It is an auspicious day known as Dhantrayodashi, which falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. “Dhan” means wealth and “Teras” means the thirteenth day and symbolizes prosperity and health.
On Dhanteras, people clean and decorate their homes and many buy gold, silver or utensils because it is believed that this brings good luck and wealth. Devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, for good health. Dhanteras also honors Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and invites prosperity into homes and businesses.

In the evening, diyas lit with oil light up the houses, rangolis at the entrance are said to attract auspicious energy; Families gather to pray, exchange gifts, and commemorate health and wealth. Make Dhanteras a festival of prosperity and bliss.
Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, has its roots in several folk tales celebrating wealth and health. A popular story is about King Hima’s son, who was predicted to die on his wedding day. His bride, determined to save him, lit up her house with lamps and gold ornaments to distract Lord Yama, the god of death, from the blinding light. Yama was so fascinated that he missed the time to claim her husband’s soul and thus save his life. Another story connects Dhanteras with Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, who emerged from the sea during Samudra Manthan and brought divine nectar and the healing knowledge of Ayurveda.

Dhanteras Puja is an important ritual that symbolizes prosperity and health. Traditionally, it begins with deep cleaning of the house to create a welcoming space for Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of health. This ritual cleansing is believed to result in positive energy and happiness.
To perform the puja, place a small altar in a clean place, usually in the east or northeast direction. Arrange idols or images of Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi along with new items like gold, silver or utensils purchased for Dhanteras. Start by lighting a diya (oil lamp) with sesame or mustard oil to symbolize the removal of negative energies. Offer fresh flowers, incense and kumkum to the deities.
A common mantra for claiming Lakshmi’s blessings is:ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं कुबेराय ी मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः॥“After prayers, families offer sweets and prasad to the gods. A small diya is placed at the entrance of the house and near the tulsi (holy basil) plant to protect oneself from misfortune. Finally, share prasad among family members and mark the occasion with a shared wish for health, prosperity and harmony in the coming year.
