The celebrations, which run until October 28, include a diverse program of events aimed at strengthening community engagement while celebrating the university’s storied heritage. This year’s inaugural event, the Best of Both Worlds Homecoming Student Concert, features R&B sensations Muni Long and Rob 49. Other events include the Escape Alumni Concert, featuring renowned artists such as Rick Ross, Tamia and Doug E. Fresh.

“For over 90 years, Homecoming at Hampton University has been more than just a celebration of Pirate pride for alumni and students. It’s an economic engine,” said Darrell K. Williams, president of Hampton University. “Each year we see a significant increase in alumni and their guests coming together, celebrating and enjoying our beautiful campus, which in turn benefits local businesses and strengthens the local economy. It’s a win-win for the city and the community.”

Other notable events include DREAMGIRLS presented by the Hampton Players, a parade, Pirates Island Tailgate and an alumni brunch. The celebrations promise to boost demand for local lodging, dining, shopping and transportation options.

These events celebrate the university and promote tourism. The data suggests visitors are likely to explore local attractions such as the Virginia Air and Space Science Center and Fort Monroe, the Peninsula Town Center and the Downtown Hampton district.

The United Negro College Fund’s recent report highlights the institution’s status as a leading HBCU in economic impact in Virginia. The university contributes $530 million annually to the state’s economy.
