Haason Reddick’s absence plays a major role in the Jets’ loss to the 49ers

The Jets had a hole in their pass rush the size of Haason Reddick on Monday night.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy faced little resistance in Monday night’s 32-19 loss, while the Jets recorded just one sack and Reddick continued his months-long offensive streak.

Jets coach Robert Saleh dodged a question about his feelings Tuesday morning after the break in play extended into the season and played a major role in the loss. And it looks like the Jets will again be without the former Eagles linebacker for their Week 2 road game against the Titans (0-1).

“Regardless of how I feel about it, we have the guys that are here. We’re excited to work with the guys here,” Saleh said on a conference call. “I’ll say it again: As soon as he walks through those doors, we’re going to give him a big hug and give him a playbook and then we’re good to go.”

It remains to be seen if the Jets can give Reddick a playbook for Week 2, as the star pass rusher remains the only player to stay away from his team before Week 1.

The Jets traded a conditional third-round pick to the Eagles so that Reddick could essentially replace Bryce Huff, but there’s just a big hole in their defense right now.

Reddick wants a contract extension and is willing to accept financial losses to do so. He will have to pay a fine of about $5 million for his absence and will have to forfeit about $800,000 for failing to play in Monday’s game.

Saleh did not make it seem as if a solution was in sight.

While Reddick wouldn’t have helped with the running game’s problems, he probably could have sparked a pass rush that wouldn’t have put as much pressure on Purdy.

Safety Tony Adams recorded the only sack, although Saleh gave the 49ers credit for their strategy.

“I thought San Francisco did a really good job with their game plan in terms of chipping on the ends and getting the ball out at the right time,” Saleh said. “I don’t think Brock held him long enough for us to really make a difference. We had some chances and couldn’t wrap him up and bring him down, but to their credit, they did a really good job of getting the ball out of his hands.”
