Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as Manchester City showed Ipswich how tough life in the Premier League can be with a comfortable win at the Etihad Stadium.

The Tractor Boys are back in the top flight for the first time in 22 years and got off to a dream start against the defending champions when Sammie Szmodics scored after seven minutes on his top-flight debut, firing a shot through the legs of Ederson.

But the joy was short-lived, as Manchester City struck back with three goals within four minutes.

First, Haaland equalised with a well-taken penalty. The penalty was awarded following a video assistant referee review after Sam Allison initially thought Savinho had attempted to dive.

Kevin de Bruyne then took advantage of Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric’s hesitation to make it 3-1, before Haaland made it 3-1 after just 16 minutes when he rounded Muric and slotted home.

Manchester City could have gone even further ahead but hit the woodwork twice. However, Ipswich appealed for a penalty which was denied when Leif Davis was brought down in the box by Brazilian winger Savinho.

The second half saw arguably the biggest celebration of the game, as Ilkay Gundogan – who completed his move back to City from Barcelona on a one-year deal on Friday – came on as a substitute to celebrate his return to the club.

Just when it looked like Ipswich had restricted Manchester City to three goals, Haaland completed his hat-trick with a low shot from distance.

The victory means Manchester City have a 100 percent winning streak in their two matches so far, while Ipswich, who faced Liverpool in their Premier League opener, are waiting for their first points after an extremely difficult start.
