Grocery chain offers Thanksgiving meal at lowest price in 5 years

It’s not even Halloween yet, but grocery stores have Thanksgiving in mind.

One company in particular announced this week that it would release an “anti-inflationary” Thanksgiving basket at the lowest price in five years.

Aldi is advertising a full meal for 10 people for a total price of $47, or $4.70 per person, its lowest price since 2019.

Its price undercuts competitor Walmart’s similar offering by about $2.

Aldi’s Thanksgiving shopping list includes a traditional spread of a Butterball turkey with seasonings, gravy, rolls, mac n’ cheese, stuffing and ingredients to make cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie.

“Every day at ALDI, we focus on finding ways to offer our customers the lowest prices possible – and this Thanksgiving is no different,” Jason Hart, the chain’s CEO, said in the release.

In recent years, food prices have risen by up to 20% due to, among other things, the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, extreme weather conditions and rising corporate profits.

However, food price inflation has moderated this year, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Aldi said its popularity had increased, likely due to consumers switching from branded products to own-brand products to save money.

“With 25% of U.S. households now shopping at Aldi, we know that grocery prices are still top of mind,” Hart said.

Aldi operates around 2,400 stores in the US and plans to open 800 stores in the next five years.
