Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer apologized for a social media video in which she wore a Harris Walz campaign hat and fed Doritos to a kneeling podcast host, which some critics said made a mockery of a sacred Christian rite.

In the clip, the Democrat was seen taking a Doritos chip from a bag and putting it in the mouth of kneeling liberal podcaster Liz Plank before the video cut to the governor, who was wearing a camouflaged Harris Walz hat. While Whitmer said the video was intended to highlight the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which allocated nearly $53 billion to efforts to bring semiconductor supply chains back to the U.S., religious leaders saw it as a parody of the sacrament of the Holy Communion.

“It’s not just tasteless or ‘weird’; “It is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious figures and their practices,” said Paul A. Long, president and CEO of the Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC). said in a opinion Representing the views of Catholic leaders in the state.

The video was created as part of a viral TikTok trend in which a person feeds another person who is behaving sexually while the song “Dilemma” by Nelly and Kelly Rowland plays in the background, before the first person stares uncomfortably into the camera.

Former Trump adviser Tim Murtaugh, for example, posted: “Let’s be clear about what’s happening in this video. Michigan Gov. Whitmer pretends to give communion to a left-wing podcaster on her knees using a Dorito as a Eucharist while wearing Harris gear. Walz has. Do they want ZERO Catholic votes for Harris?”

Following the backlash, Whitmer apologized for the video and emphasized that the video was not intended to mock people of faith.

“In my 25 years of public service, I would never do anything to denigrate anyone’s faith,” the governor said in a statement to Fox 2. “I have used my platform to advocate for people’s right to express their personal faith to accept and practice religious beliefs.”

“My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference,” she continued. “What was supposed to be a video about what the CHIPS Act means for jobs in Michigan was interpreted as something it was never intended to be, and for that I apologize.”
