Taco Bell started in the Golden State

According to https://www.tacobell.com/history, Taco Bell founder Glen Bell created his version of the Crunchy Taco in 1951. Three years later, he founded Bell’s Drive-In and Taco Tia in the San Bernardino area.

Other significant events in Taco Bell’s history included:

• In 1962, Bell opened his first Taco Bell restaurant in Downey, Los Angeles. Two years later, retired Los Angeles police officer Kermit Becky became Taco Bell’s first franchisee when he opened a location in another L.A. suburb, Torrance.
• After that, the chain grew quickly. The 100th Taco Bell location opened in Anaheim in 1967.
• In 1978, Glen Bell sold 868 Taco Bell restaurants to PepsiCo Inc. Later, in 1997, Tricon became Taco Bell’s new parent company and the chain became independent of PepsiCo.
• In 1989, Taco Bell was among the first fast food restaurants to tie its advertising to films, in this case the Tim Burton-directed Batman starring Michael Keaton. Both the Warner Bros. film and the Taco Bell promotion were hits.
• In 1993’s “Demolition Man,” the characters played by Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock talked about Taco Bell while driving before stopping at the futuristic restaurant. Watch the clip on YouTube, where the scene continues with an extraordinary Taco Bell and a pianist at a grand piano singing a well-known jingle. No, the song is not about Taco Bell.
• In 1998, gorditas, flatbreads wrapped around crispy taco shells, “became a nationwide sensation,” Taco Bell said.
• In 2005, Taco Bell successfully introduced its Crunchwrap Supreme, which contains seasoned beef, tomatoes, nacho cheese sauce, lettuce and low-fat sour cream. There’s a lot you can add. Jalapeño peppers, anyone?
• In 2012, Taco Bell delivered 10,000 Doritos Locos Tacos by helicopter to the remote town of Bethel, Alaska.
• In 2015, Taco Bell showed its concern for its history by saving its original Downey restaurant from demolition. It was moved to its headquarters in Irvine.
• The restaurant introduced its Cheese-Stuffed Quesalupa in 2016 and Nacho Fries in 2018.
• And in 2018, the chain took a trip back in time and unveiled Taco Bell 2032 at San Diego Comic-Con, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the film “Demolition Man,” set in 2032 and featuring Taco Bell.
