North Carolina State University quarterback Grayson McCall has retired from football after suffering a concussion from which he “cannot come back,” the 23-year-old announced Wednesday.

The senior was carried off the field during the Wolfpack game against Wake Forest on Oct. 5 after suffering a blow to the head. He hasn’t played since the injury.

Grayson McCall was carried off the field after suffering a blow to the head in the NC State Wolfpack's game against Wake Forest on Oct. 5.

“As you all know, I have struggled with injuries throughout my career, but I am not coming back from this injury,” McCall said in an Instagram post. “I did everything I could to keep going, but the good Lord called me here to serve in another place. Brain specialists, my family and I have concluded that it is in my best interest to hang up the boots.”

McCall has a history of concussions. In the final season that ended his year, he suffered an illness while at Coastal Carolina.

The three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year transferred from Coastal Carolina to NC State before the season and has thrown for 518 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Wolfpack.

“While I feel like my whole world is being taken away from me, I do feel some sense of contentment,” McCall continued Wednesday. “Every time my feet touched the grass, I left every single ounce of me on the field. I always tried my best and did my best because I never knew what play would be my last. I have no regrets throughout my career and I can be proud of that. I would like to use this time to show my appreciation to everyone who was there.

“I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, fans and all the coaches who have supported me over the years from the bottom of my heart. Without all of you, none of this would have been possible.”

True freshman quarterback CJ Bailey took over for McCall as the starter and the Wolfpack is 4-4 this season.

NC State’s next game is scheduled for November 2nd against Stanford.

McCall said he would like to coach and said he looks forward to “bringing my passion and love for the game into coaching to serve and guide the next group of kids with a dream.”
