Grant to plant over 60 trees at Newtown Square

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA — To encourage the planting of more trees in local communities, Newtown Square in Bloom recently announced it will receive a $4,000 Healing the Planet grant in 2024 from The GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

Newtown Square in Bloom will use the grant to replant 33 native trees and 30 native evergreens along the one-mile tree corridor between the Goshen Walking Trail and Goshen Road, where many ash trees had to be removed due to the Asian ash borer.

Work on this “Newtown Square in Bloom” project will be conducted with the support of Newtown Township Public Works, Newtown Township Environmental Advisory Council, Newtown Township Parks and Recreation, and the Shade Tree Commission and is expected to be completed by the end of November of this year.

“This grant will help improve air quality, filter storm water, prevent puddles of water on the sidewalk, and create a sound barrier against car noise,” said Paul Seligson, Chairman of Newtown Square in Bloom. “We received 76 applications in total, making the process very competitive. We are extremely grateful to PA 168th District Representative Lisa Borowski for helping our community receive this grant.”

This project was funded by GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Healing the Planet grant program. GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful awarded a total of $108,243 to support 32 projects focused on tree planting projects. Funds for the grants were provided by customers of GIANT supermarkets, MARTIN’S and GIANT Heirloom Market stores who agreed to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar from March through May.

Donations from the public for Newtown Square in Bloom are accepted for beautification projects such as hanging baskets, floral arrangements at Newtown Township welcome signs, and street trees. Volunteers from many Township residents, organizations, and businesses help plant flowers and trees, develop our trail system, clean parks and streams on Arbor Day, weed and maintain Drexel Lodge Park’s pollinator garden, and enhance the significance of our historic buildings.
