Grand Island sports review from Saturday

Islanders lose 0-2 to Norfolk

NORFOLK – The Grand Island Senior High softball team lost two games to Norfolk on Saturday.

The Islanders lost the opening game 3-1. Alex Hormann led the GISH offense with 2-for-3, while Lexi Perez hit an RBI single in the loss.

Grand Island lost the second game 7-5, with Norfolk scoring two runs in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Raygan Hoos led the offense with 3-for-3 and a double, while Kiera Wolfe was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double and Aysha Gawrych was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Islanders host Lincoln Pius X in a doubleheader on Thursday.

GICC loses 0-3 at York Quad

YORK – The Grand Island Central Catholic softball team finished 0-3 in the York Quad on Saturday.

The GICC team had some good hitting but couldn’t get the better of York starter Lauryn Mattox, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in four innings in an 11-1 loss Saturday morning. Here, Laura Blake (7) hits a groundout in the first inning; Blake also had a base hit in the Crusaders’ 5-3 loss to Cozad in the first game of the day.

The Crusaders lost their opener to Cozad 5-3. They had eight hits in the loss. Jocelyn Price led the offense with 2-for-3 and an RBI, while Madalyn Renz went 2-for-4 and a double.

GICC suffered an 11-1 loss to York in four innings in the second game. Grace Watson was 1 for 2 with an RBI to lead the offense.







Logan Rainforth

Logan Rainforth (4) had one of the Crusaders’ two hits in an 11-1 loss to York on Saturday morning, but she was also the pitcher with the highest record in the circle, allowing five runs – four earned – on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

The Crusaders lost their last game to Fairbury, 10-8. Trailing 9-3 after two innings, they scored five runs in the next two innings to cut the deficit to one, but couldn’t get any closer. Renz was 3 for 3 with a home run and an RBI, while Logan Rainforth was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a home run.

GICC plays in St. Paul on Monday at 6 p.m.
