Goshen Springs residents demand traffic safety changes near Sunset Grill

RANKIN COUNTY, Mississippi (WLBT) – It’s been a month since a woman, 41-year-old Marcie Errington, was struck and killed by a car outside the Sunset Grill in Rankin County.

Now, people who live in and travel through this busy area are expressing a desire for more road safety measures.

Around the northern edge of Barnett Reservoir and Highway 43, hundreds of campers, fishermen, foodies and more visit the Sunset Grill and other businesses every day.

“Highway 43 and between Highway 25 and up to the Natchez Trace are very busy in the morning and afternoon. People usually drive 55 to 60 miles per hour, even faster over this bridge,” explained Lisa Williams.

Lisa Edwards, who lives near Goshen Springs, says the gas station, two campgrounds, fishing pier and restaurant also generate a lot of foot traffic.

“Everyone was worried. You know, knowing that someone was actually killed out there,” she said. “The restaurant was closed for at least 24 hours because they were afraid that this happened after she had been in their establishment.”

Now Edwards and others are pushing for increased traffic safety measures to ensure people can safely move between stores.

“There are no speed limit signs between Highway 25 and the (Natchez) Trace. There are no signs far enough in advance to indicate that these businesses are there,” Edwards said.

We asked MDOT if they had any plans to change traffic flow near the bridge. They made the following statement:

“It’s not difficult to put up signs to allow access so people know exactly what to expect when they’re traveling from out of town or commuting to work,” Edwards said.
