The launch of the new Pixel 9 means the older model may disappear from the shelves

With the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series, the two-year-old Pixel model is likely to disappear from the range, but will the foldable device now also disappear from the shelves?

Google unveiled the next generation of its flagship smartphone series, the Pixel 9, at its annual Made by Google hardware event earlier this month. The company launched four smartphones at the event, as well as the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds 2 Pro.

The newly launched Pixel 9 series includes Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Shortly after the launch, the company stopped selling select previous-generation Pixel devices in India. Google stopped selling the Pixel 7 series and the original foldable smartphone Pixel Fold.

The tech giant appears to have discontinued the original Pixel Fold and the Pixel 7 series phones. Reports suggest that the first Pixel Fold will disappear from shelves alongside the Pixel 7 series phone effective immediately. However, recent updates suggest that Google will only stop selling the Pixel 7 models and keep the Pixel Fold available in select countries.

Google Pixel Fold

Launched in May 2023, the first-generation Pixel Fold marked Google’s entry into the foldable smartphone market. Powered by Google’s custom Tensor G2 processor, Google Pixel Fold was offered with storage options of 256GB or 512GB.

Google Pixel Fold was launched for $1,799 (roughly Rs. 150,000) as a base model with 256GB storage. The phone was available in two color variants – Obsidian and Porcelain. Google offered the 512GB storage variant in Obsidian color only for $1,919 (roughly Rs. 160,000) and the product never made it to the Indian market.

Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro

Both the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were launched in the Indian market in October 2022. The handsets come with Google’s Tensor G2 chipset, a 50MP main camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. These devices were the first to be offered with Google’s Photo Unblur feature that uses machine learning to improve blurry images. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were available in 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 128GB variants for Rs 59,999 and Rs 84,999 respectively in the country.
