Globo presents TV 2.5 improvements on Hisense TVs during the Paris Olympics

RIO-DE-JANEIRO—Advanced HDR from Technicolor, Fraunhofer IIS and Globo presented High Dynamic Range (HDR) and MPEG-H audio content that complies with the Brazilian TV 2.5 standard on Hisense TVs during the just-concluded Paris Olympic Games.

The demonstration showed how content can be upconverted using standard dynamic range (SDR) to provide a premium viewing experience during live broadcasts of major outdoor sports and other events, said Technicolor’s Advanced HDR.

Technicolor’s Advanced HDR delivered premium HDR content by leveraging the solution suite’s Intelligent Tone Mapping (ITM) feature to upconvert live SDR content to HDR while adding dynamic SL-HDR metadata to create a TV 2.5 HDR signal in an SDR backwards compatible manner. TVs supporting the TV 2.5 standard received the HDR experience without compromising the quality of the SDR delivered on older sets, it said.

“HDR enhances the outdoor sporting event experience by delivering the most vivid images on televisions capable of receiving HDR content,” said Valerie Allie, senior director of the Video Solution Group at InterDigital.

“This brings the details of the sporting performances, the stadium environment and all the action to life, making for a more intense viewing experience,” she said.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a collaboration between Philips, InterDigital and Technicolor.

Fraunhofer IIS provided MPEG-H audio technology that enables an immersive 3D sound experience. In addition to a comprehensive sound experience, the Next Generation Audio system offers unique personalization functions, according to Fraunhofer.

This is made possible by the metadata that accompanies the audio content. It contains all the necessary control information for user interactivity and optimizes playback and display on the device for the best audio experience on every platform, it says.

“MPEG-H Audio creates an immersive experience and creates the feeling of being in the middle of the action. Audio elements such as the cheering crowd, the movements of the athletes and the atmosphere of the venue are clear and realistic. The personalization options also allow viewers to customize the audio experience, for example by switching from a conventional to a venue mix. This improved audio quality adds depth to the broadcast and makes the experience more exciting and engaging for the audience,” said Adrian Murtaza, Senior Manager for Technologies and Standards at Fraunhofer IIS.

A new generation of Hisense television models that meet the country’s TV 2.5 standard were used for the demonstration.

These advanced TV models promise a superior viewing experience by combining ultra-high definition (UHD) and HDR-enhanced picture quality with impressive 3D sound.

“Hisense TVs integrate features such as Mini LED, Quantum Dot Color, 144Hz refresh rate, vivid highlights, AI video processing and AI Sports Mode that enhance the viewing of live sports.
