Glamorgan batsman Byrom out for the rest of the season with a leg injury

Glamorgan’s opening batsman Eddie Byrom is out for the rest of the season with a leg injury.

Byrom limped off the pitch after an unfortunate fall on the field during the One-Day Cup victory in Essex.

He was expected to feature regularly in the remainder of the 50-overs competition and the four-day championship.

Byrom also missed the first three championship games after dislocating his shoulder during preseason.

All-rounder Ben Kellaway was the last to be promoted to opener against Derbyshire, scoring nil and 36 and taking three wickets.

“Ben is a special talent and we believe he deserves a chance on the team, even though it is not necessarily his preferred position,” said coach Grant Bradburn.

“But with Eddie Byrom injured and no one to take the vacant spot, it was a good opportunity to bring two all-rounders into the team, Ben and Dan Douthwaite.”

Glamorgan used Will Smale and Asa Tribe to open the One Day Cup after Byrom’s injury, while Billy Root topped the order in nine Championship matches and Zain Ul Hassan did so in the first three games.

The county has struggled with the consistency of its opening batsmen, with 12 different players – more than half of the senior team – filling that role in 2023.

Meanwhile, seam bowler James Harris is not yet fit to return from a hamstring injury sustained against Northamptonshire in June, but Bradburn is confident he will be able to play again this season.

Canterbury’s Fraser Sheat and on-loan Somerset bowler Ned Leonard both made their debuts in the defeat at Derby.

Glamorgan play three of their four remaining Championship games at home, starting against Leicestershire on Thursday 29 August, as well as a One-Day Cup final against Somerset at Trent Bridge on Sunday 22 September.
