Giants HC Brian Daboll subbed QB for “Spark” in the game, but Daniel Jones will move forward

The Giants offense actually had three goals on the field just before halftime, but was otherwise thwarted and thwarted by the swarming Eagles defense.

And while Jones certainly bears some of the blame for the team’s anemic performance, there was little else going around him. With left tackle Andrew Thomas out for the season following Lisfranc surgery, Big Blue’s ground game was off. Outside of the QB battles, New York gained just 43 yards on the ground, while Tyrone Tracy Jr. led the way with 23 yards.

Jones was constantly under pressure and recorded six sacks, but also failed to make the big plays that were occasionally available to him. Even the return of full-back Malik Nabers after a two-game absence couldn’t get things going; The rookie led the club with 41 yards on four catches.

When asked what makes him believe Jones is capable of making explosive plays when he hasn’t been able to do so in recent years, Daboll responded — as the Giants did most of the day — with some reserve.

“We have some guys around him that can make explosive plays,” he said. “We’re just going to go back to the drawing board and do our best to try to improve that area. Two weeks in a row, but it’s been a while, we haven’t created them.” And we have to do it.

Still, New York failed to turn things around with Jones missing on multiple occasions, but struggled with similar problems behind Lock against an Eagles team that had trailed by a 25-point lead.

Jones had ended in punts on eight of his nine drives, which totaled 94 net yards.

On Lock’s three drives (excluding running out time on a fourth), New York added just 13 more net yards and three more punts, and the backup QB also fumbled twice.

It was the type of game the Giants want to give up to get back on track, and that’s exactly what they’re looking to do with Jones leading the way.

“I’m just going to continue to prepare and try to play as well as I can,” Jones told reporters. “Daboll, it is his team and it is up to him to make these decisions. Obviously I believe in myself and I believe in this offense, so I’m just going to focus on myself.”

The Giants’ next game is at the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 28th Monday Night Football.
