New York Yankees fans desperately want a World Series, and they want their players to be just as hungry. So when you watch a Giancarlo Stanton basically jogging across the base path grids.

Either Stanton is the slowest player in the majors or he’s not giving it his all. Seriously, there are NFL offensive linemen who could run 90 feet faster than New York’s No. 27.

Twice, Stanton’s lack of speed or effort cost the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Kansas City Royals. Trailing 3-2, Staton didn’t make it home despite Oswaldo Cabrera hitting a ball to left-center that Kyle Isbel couldn’t quite deflect.

Most other baserunners would have made it a run.

Later, with the Yankees and Royals tied 5-5, Stanton hit a grounder to third. If he had made it to first, New York would have avoided the inning-ending and scored Juan Soto from third.

Spoiler: He didn’t make it first.

You know you’re a notoriously bad baserunner when Bob Costas utters the phrase, “Because Stanton runs, they’re able to make the play.”

MLB Twitter was equally unforgiving.

The difference between winning and losing in October may come down to a single move. Just ask the New York Mets, who made the playoffs in part because of a fumble play by Jose Iglesias at first base. He worked his butt off to give himself a chance and did it.

Stanton may not have had the speed to hit that throw. But fans would like to see him try. The throw arrived just a fraction of a second before him. It looked like he had a chance.

Championships are won by narrow margins. Stanton should play like that.
