Gesture at Sussexes’ wedding ‘uncomfortable’ for late Queen | Royal | News

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s lavish Windsor ceremony took place in May 2018 and was watched by an estimated 1.9 billion people.

The happy couple were married at St George’s Chapel with their family and friends in front of 600 guests. As was widely known, there was a lot of tension in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, but when the big day arrived, everything seemed to go smoothly.

Unfortunately, according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, there was one gesture at the wedding that the late queen was not particularly impressed with.

Just days before Harry and Meghan’s wedding, Meghan’s father announced that he would not be attending the wedding due to health reasons, leaving his daughter with no one to walk her down the aisle. King Charles graciously stepped in to save the day. But while his gesture was well-intentioned, it left the Queen feeling uncomfortable, according to Seward’s latest book.

In her book My Mother and I, Ingrid Seward writes: “The Queen did not approve of the Prince of Wales representing Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, and she was equally concerned about 96-year-old Prince Philip walking down the aisle without a cane after having hip surgery just five weeks earlier.”

After the wedding, it came to light that Harry was the one who had asked his father to walk his future wife down the aisle, something he recalled in the documentary “Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.”

In the documentary, Harry said: “I asked him about it and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I will do whatever Meghan needs and I am here to support you.'”

Previously, another book, Queen of Our Times, claimed that Meghan surprised Charles with her firm response when he offered to walk her down the aisle.

In the book, author Robert Hardman wrote: “The answer, said one friend, was not quite what he expected: ‘Can we meet halfway?’ This was an indication that this was not a blushing bride but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”

The fact that then-Prince Charles walked Meghan down the aisle was not the only anti-traditional surprise that worried the Queen. According to Seward, the Queen was also unhappy with the color of Meghan Markle’s dress.

Seward writes: “Lady Elizabeth told me that the Queen made only one comment to her about Meghan and Harry’s wedding, and that was that the bride’s Givenchy wedding dress was ‘too white.’ From the monarch’s point of view, it was not appropriate for a divorcee remarrying in church to look so extravagantly virginal.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been estranged from King Charles and the rest of the royal family since 2020 and currently live in California with their two children, Archie and Lillibet.
