Geotechnical work for Sound Transit at 32nd Avenue SW

Information from sound transit

Starting already Monday, August 19Sound Transit plans to conduct a geotechnical drilling for soil analysis in the alley between West Seattle

Bridge and 32nd Ave SW (see map for exact location). This location may shift slightly depending on the placement of underground utilities. Sound Transit is in the planning phase for the West Seattle Link Extension project. This work, along with other studies throughout the project corridor, is required to plan and design potential light rail routes to be studied as part of the environmental assessment process.

Geotechnical drilling

To study soil and groundwater conditions, a drilling rig will be used to drill vertically into the ground and collect soil samples. After collecting soil samples, a monitoring device will be installed so that teams can monitor water levels on future visits. Water level measurements will be taken every few months during the design phase.

Bores ranging in diameter from 4 to 12 inches are carefully drilled in accordance with all local regulations to prevent soil erosion and the intrusion of dirt or mud into surface waters, wetlands and drainage systems.

• Work is expected to begin already Monday, August 19 and be complete through Wednesday28.08..

• The activities are planned by Weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Teams work within the designated work area.

No parking signs will be posted in the southbound lanes on Route 32.and Ave SW and nearby TThe alley between West Seattle Bridge and 32nd Ave SW at least 72 hours before work begins. No parking signs are enforceable during the days and times indicated on them.

• Roads and driveways remain open.

• Dates and times are subject to change due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.

• Drilling equipment sounds like a running truck engine, occasionally with hammering.
