Georgia firefighter killed in line of duty

Chris Eddy, Battalion Chief of the Greene County Fire Department (Included in delivery)

Chris Eddy, battalion chief of the Greene County Fire Department, was killed while battling a truck fire near Greensboro.

Just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters were called to Athens Highway at Lick Skillet Road.

At some point during the firefighting, an explosion occurred which injured Eddy. He died from his injuries.

It is unclear whether other people were injured in the explosion.

The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.

Those who responded to posts about Eddy’s death remember him as an honorable man, a joker and one of the bravest firefighters.

Battalion Chief Eddy was assigned to Greene County Fire Department Station No. 11.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Battalion Chief Eddy,” the Greene County Board of Commissioners posted on its Facebook page.

“GCFR is at a loss for words right now. We simply cannot believe this. Praying for our department in the coming days and weeks. RIP Chief Eddy!” Greene County Fire Rescue wrote on its Facebook page.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Services were not announced.
