Georgia cornerback Daniel Harris arrested for five traffic-related offenses

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested Thursday night by Athens Clarke County police on five traffic-related offenses, all of which are misdemeanors.

Harris was arrested at 10:40 p.m. ET and charged with reckless driving, failure to use seat belt, operating an unregistered vehicle without a license plate, no proof of insurance, and placing materials that obscure visibility through windows/windshield.

The second-year cornerback was released on $50 bail at 11:49 p.m. ET.

According to the arrest report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the officer was monitoring traffic at the GA 10 Loop on-ramp at College Station Road. The office states in the report that Harris’ vehicle was clocked at 106 mph using a department-provided radar device.

The arresting officer also stated that the driver’s seat belt was fastened while the vehicle was being secured without anyone sitting in the seat, indicating that the belt was behind his back while driving, rather than across his chest and lap.

Harris has been part of Georgia’s cornerback rotation this season, competing with Julian Humphrey for the spot next to Daylen Everette. If Harris doesn’t play this weekend, freshman Ellis Robinson would get more snaps.

“Well, they do that all day long, so it’s not a situation where you can handle it. They practice the same way every day,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said of the cornerbacks. “Sometimes they’re in and sometimes they’re not, so I think they’re handling it well. They’re doing a good job of what we’ve asked them to do. There’s a lot of areas where they can clean up and play better, and we’re constantly looking to get better with these guys.”

Georgia will release an availability report on Friday night that could provide some clarity on Harris’ status for this weekend’s game against Kentucky.

“I understand the availability report when it was discussed. There was a debate about whether you have to put that on there,” Smart said previously. “I think you’re talking about a non-injury-based reason for not playing. For example, if a kid has a death in the family and isn’t going to be at the game because they have to go to a funeral or they’re suspended. There’s another category where you have to put that down that they’re not going to play. There was a debate about that. I think ultimately you have to put that down, but there was a disclosure to me and several coaches in the SEC who were concerned about what the speculation would be.”

Running back Trevor Etienne was suspended for Georgia’s game against Clemson due to a violation of university rules. However, Smael Mondon, Sacovie White and Bo Hughley were all arrested for traffic-related violations in the offseason and were not suspended.

The game between Georgia and Kentucky begins at 7:30 p.m. ET. ABC will broadcast the game.
