Gauff loses to Navarro: US Open women’s tennis table updated after Sunday’s results | News, results, highlights, stats and rumors

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 01: Coco Gauff of the United States reacts against Emma Navarro of the United States during their fourth round match in the women's singles on day seven of the 2024 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 1, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the New York borough of Queens. The 2023 US Open winner was eliminated in the round of 16.

Third-seeded Coco Gauff lost to No. 13 Emma Navarro in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday. This ended her participation in the US Open much earlier than last year, when she defeated Rebeka Masarova in the final.

Navarro will now advance to the quarterfinals for the first time and will face Paula Badosa there.

After Gauff’s departure, you can find the updated table here.

It was an uncharacteristic performance for Gauff as she made 19 double faults, including 11 in the final set, compared to just 13 winners in the match.

Navarro won the first set comfortably and took a 4-3 lead in the second, but Gauff stormed back, winning 12 of the last 15 points and forcing a third set. Gauff’s difficulties were evident in the final set, however, when she made a series of errors and did not have enough points to advance to the quarterfinals.

Navarro has been superior to Gauff at Grand Slam tournaments this year, defeating her Olympic teammate at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships earlier this summer. The two young stars, Gauff (20) and Navarro (23), have an exciting rivalry for years to come, but this time Navarro has won the battle.

Navarro and Badosa are the only two to have made it to the quarter-finals so far, but there are plenty of big-name names looking to cement their place soon. The most famous of the group is world number one Iga Świątek, who will face Liudmila Samsonova, currently ranked 16th, on Sunday.

On the other side of the tournament, world number two Aryna Sabalenka will face number 33 Elise Mertens on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals.
