Game status | Dorance Armstrong was eliminated against the Panthers

The Washington Commanders have ruled out defensive end Dorance Armstrong for their Week 7 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Armstrong, who left Washington’s game against the Ravens with a rib injury, did not participate in practice all week. It’s the latest blow to the Commanders’ defensive line, which has already ruled out Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen for the season with a torn pectoral muscle and placed rookie defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste on injured reserve.

The Commanders have already added backup depth to their front line by signing defensive tackle Sheldon Day from the practice squad and adding defensive end Jalyn Holmes, a 2018 fourth-round pick with seven years of experience, to the active roster.

Coach Dan Quinn didn’t expect Armstrong’s injury to be a long-term situation, but his presence will be missed against a Panthers offensive line that is one of the opposing team’s better position groups. According to Pro Football Focus, Armstrong leads the Commanders with 20 total pressures, including 11 hurries and five quarterback hits.

On the bright side, the Commanders are back to full strength on offense with Brian Robinson Jr. nearing his return after missing the Ravens game with a knee injury. Robinson said in the locker room after Thursday’s practice that he felt more like himself since last week’s practice. He was back on the field this week, which should provide a boost to the running game and the offense as a whole. He is officially listed as questionable, although Quinn said Friday that Robinson had a strong week of practice.

“He’s a big part of what we do,” offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said. “I mean, both emotionally and physically. The way he plays the game, the joy with which he plays, what he brings to training, that’s a big thing for us as a unit.”

Other key offensive players like wideout Noah Brown, guard Nick Allegretti and center Tyler Biadasz will all be available after being listed on the injury report with various injuries.

At linebacker, it’s possible the Commanders could remove rookie Jordan Magee from the injured reserve list, although Quinn wasn’t asked about that possibility on Friday. The 21-day window for his return to the active roster is closing soon, and if the commanders decide against it, he will have to return to IR for the remainder of the season. Magee is listed as questionable

Tyler Owens, who suffered a shin injury, is out and will miss his third straight game. Clelin Ferrell (knee) is listed as questionable.

The remaining players on the Commanders’ injury report, including Percy Butler (groin), Quan Martin (neck), Daron Payne (knee) and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. (thumb), will all be available.
