Game Recap: Rams defeat Raiders 20-15

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Rams (2-4) defeated the Raiders 20-15 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, with safety Jaylen McCollough’s second interception of the game with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter securing the victory.

Los Angeles turned two interceptions by Las Vegas quarterback Gardner Minshew into touchdown drives on each of the following possessions – one late in the first half and another midway through the third quarter – to build a 20-6 lead. Combined with LA’s defense holding the Las Vegas offense to five field goals – and 0-2 in the redzone – and McCollough’s late interception, it was enough to overcome almost costly self-inflicted mistakes in the second half.

Cornerback Cobie Durant also had a big game for LA’s defense, recording an interception and a forced fumble that was returned by safety Kam Curl for a touchdown.

Running back Kyren Williams finished the game with 21 carries for 76 yards and two rushing touchdowns; His two rushing scores surpassed Eric Dickerson and he scored the most touchdowns by a Rams player in his first 17 starts.

Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (ankle) was inactive for this game.

Here is the full game summary, presented by Corona:

After a scoreless first quarter, the Raiders took an early 3-0 lead on a 38-yard field goal from kicker Daniel Carlson with 14:04 left in the second quarter.

The Rams reached the Raiders’ 49 on the ensuing possession, but gave the ball back from that point after a failed conversion attempt on 4th-and-1.

Cornerback Cobie Durant gained a big advantage for Los Angeles late in the first half after pressure from fullback Jared Verse forced a missed throw by Las Vegas quarterback Gardner Minshew, who had replaced Aidan O’Connell after O’Connell suffered a thumb injury and it was doubtful whether I would return. The Rams turned the turnover into points with a 13-yard touchdown run by Kyren Williams to take a 7-3 lead with three minutes left in the first half.

On the next defensive series, Durant came up big again, this time forcing a Minshew fumble that Curl caught and returned 33 yards for a touchdown to extend LA’s lead to 14-3 with 1:23 left in the first half.

The Rams held the Raiders to a field goal just before the end of the first half and maintained a 14-6 halftime lead.

Los Angeles took advantage of Minshew a second time when safety Jaylen McCollough intercepted a Minshew pass that deflected off the hands of wide receiver Tre Tucker to give LA possession at the Las Vegas 31-yard line. The Rams turned that takeaway into points again with a 2-yard touchdown run from Williams, extending their lead to 20-6 midway through the third quarter. The ensuing point after the attempt was useless, missed wide right by kicker Josh Karty.

A 38-yard field goal by Carlson cut the Rams’ lead to 11, and the return of an interception on the following series off a deflected pass from Matthew Stafford brought the Raiders to the Rams’ 14-yard line. Still, the Rams defense held off the Raiders with a 27-yard field goal to maintain a 20-12 lead with 14:52 left in the fourth quarter.

Aided by a third-down defensive stop and an explosive 37-yard completion from Stafford to wide receiver Tyler Johnson, the Rams appeared to be on their way to regaining a two-possession lead. However, the drive stalled at the Raiders’ 16, and Karty missed the ensuing 35-yard field goal attempt, keeping the score at 20-12 with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter.

The momentum took the Raiders to the Rams’ 4-yard box on the ensuing series, but once again Las Vegas had to settle for a short field goal, leaving the Rams’ score at 20-15 with 2:50 left.

The Rams reached their own 48 on the following drive but were forced to punt. Nonetheless, McCollough was the hero, intercepting Minshew’s deep pass intended for wide receiver DJ Turner and securing the win.
