Game Recap: No. 15 Alabama defeats No. 21 Missouri on homecoming

After losing two of its last three games, Alabama responded in Week 9 against No. 21 Missouri in the only way possible: a big win.

Despite a sluggish first quarter for both teams, the Tigers’ hopes were dashed when starting quarterback Brady Cook suffered an injury in the second quarter and did not return for the rest of the night. From then on, it was all Kane Wommack’s “Swarm D.” The Crimson Tide intercepted Mizzou backup Drew Pyne three times; Malachi Moore caught the first, and then Bray Hubbard and Qua Russaw both recorded their first career interceptions.

The Crimson Tide offense also corrected one of its many mistakes from Week 8 in Knoxville by capitalizing on turnovers. Alabama scored two goals after the three interceptions.

When the final whistle sounded, Alabama finished the game with a 34-0 victory, the first shutout of the Kalen DeBoer era. The Crimson Tide have a week to regroup with an open date before traveling to Baton Rouge to face LSU on November 9th.

FIRST QUARTER

Summary of points:

—FIELD GOAL Alabama: Graham Nicholson 47-yard field goal (8 plays, 50 yards)

Alabama 3, Missouri 0 | 8:50

Key game:

Alabama moved effectively downfield on its first drive, gaining 53 yards until it faced a third down at the Missouri 25-yard line. Alabama’s rushing attempt was blocked and the Crimson Tide forced Miami (Ohio) transfer kicker Graham Nicholson to kick a field goal attempt. Nicholson hit his shot from 47 yards, the longest of his Alabama career.

Player of the Quarter:

Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell had a great game for Alabama in the first quarter, leading the team with four tackles and the team’s only sack. Campbell broke through the offensive line on Missouri’s second play of the afternoon and brought down Tigers quarterback Brady Cook for a sack. Alabama held Missouri to just 35 yards of offense on the first play.

SECOND QUARTER

Summary of points:

—FIELD GOAL Alabama: Graham Nicholson 39-yard field goal (11 plays, 59 yards)

Alabama 6, Missouri 0 | 4:38

—Touchdown Alabama: Jam Miller 3-yard touchdown rush (3 plays, 35 yards)

Alabama 13, Missouri 0 | 1:54

Key game:

After Missouri quarterback Brady Cook went to the locker room midway through the second quarter, the Tigers sent in Notre Dame transfer and backup Drew Pyne to replace the usual starter. After three consecutive runs to start the series, Pyne threw the ball and looked for his top wideout, Luther Burden III. An earned pass fell into the hands of Alabama safety Malachi Moore, who returned the ball to the Alabama 34-yard line. Alabama scored its first touchdown of the afternoon three plays later.

Player of the Quarter:

Since Week 4, Alabama has struggled to establish a running game and has been unable to open up its offense through the floor. In the second quarter against Missouri, Jam Miller flashed a glimmer of hope for the running game as he looked explosive on his runs, including a 14-yard pop and a punch-in touchdown from the three-yard line.

THIRD QUARTER

Summary of points:

—Alabama touchdown: Jalen Milroe 3-yard touchdown rush (6 plays, 80 yards)

Alabama 20, Missouri 0 | 12:33

—Alabama touchdown: Jalen Milroe 5-yard touchdown rush (5 plays, 65 yards)

Alabama 27, Missouri 0 | 4:28

Key game:

On Missouri’s first offensive series of the second half, Pyne was looking for a streak for Burden when the junior took a step on DaShawn Jones. As the ball headed towards Burden, sophomore defender Bray Hubbard flew in from Burden’s right side, jumped into the air and grabbed the ball before it fell out of bounds.

Player of the Quarter:

The interception was Hubbard’s first takeaway from his career and a confidence boost for the Mississippi native, who was playing as a replacement for Keon Sabb, who is out for an extended period of time with an injury.

FOURTH QUARTER

Summary of points:

—Touchdown Alabama: Justice Haynes 35-yard touchdown rush (5 plays, 77 yards)

Alabama 34, Missouri 0 | 11:06

Key game:

On one of its final offensive attacks of the game, Alabama held on to throw a shutout over Missouri, which worked the ball all the way to the Alabama 1-yard line and attempted to rush into the end zone on fourth down. Instead, Tigers running back Marcus Carroll found freshman Justin Okoronkwo, who pulled Carroll down for a loss of yardage, preserving the Alabama shutout.

Player of the Quarter:

After making the fourth down stop to preserve their shutout, Alabama’s offensive reserves were faced with the challenge of escaping their own end zone and securing themselves at the 2-yard line. On second-and-9, running back Richard Young broke through the Mizzou defense for a 62-yard rush, Alabama’s biggest play of the night. In the fourth, Young totaled 63 rushing yards on three runs.
