Despite the loss, India are still at the top of the WTC points table having registered eight wins in 12 games so far this season.

New Zealand created history on Sunday when they defeated India by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to register their first win in the country in 36 years. It was also their third victory in history on Indian soil after achieving their first in 1969. On the contrary, India’s streak of six straight home wins since Hyderabad’s loss to England earlier this year came to an end, but the bigger concern of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma was that the defeat would affect their plans for the World Test Championship thwarted.

Despite the loss, India are still at the top of the WTC points table having registered eight wins in 12 games so far this season. This gives them a PCT of 68.05, a decrease from their previous value of 74.24.

Ahead of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, India needed to make another attempt to secure a ticket to the WTC final for the third consecutive year. A 3-0 win at home would have given India peace of mind in the all-important Border-Gavaskar series in Australia, which begins in Perth next month.

However, a loss to New Zealand put India in a precarious position as they not only need to bounce back in the ongoing series to secure a 2-1 win but also need to avoid more than one defeat in the Australia Test series . In short, for India to secure qualification for the WTC finals regardless of other results, they need at least four wins and two draws (56 points) in the remaining seven Tests to achieve a PCT score of 67.54.
