Gaelic Games: Monaghan looking for new manager after Corey’s departure

Monaghan senior football manager Vinny Corey has resigned from his post at the county.

Corey, who previously served as selector under his predecessor Seamus McEnaney, took over the job in September 2022 and led the team to an All-Ireland semi-final in his first season as coach.

Despite a generally respectable performance, they narrowly lost to Dublin at Croke Park that day, but in 2024 the results were mixed.

After beating Dublin in the first round of the Allianz League, they went almost five months without a win, a run that saw them relegated from Division One and eliminated from the Ulster Championship by Cavan in the preliminary round.

Although they advanced from the All-Ireland group stage thanks to a win over Meath, they lost to eventual finalists Galway in the preliminary quarter-finals.

“Monaghan GAA would like to express its sincere appreciation to Vinny for his tireless service to Monaghan GAA over the last 22 years, 18 as a player, 2 as a selector and 2 years at the helm as senior manager,” the county said in a statement.

“We are very grateful for Vinny’s outstanding support and commitment to Monaghan GAA over the years and value his contributions as a player, selector and manager.

“Monaghan GAA fully respects Vinny’s decision to step down and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours.”

Monaghan are the second Ulster side to search for a new manager following the departure of Mickey Harte from Derry last month.
