Since Hurricane Helene hit Florida on September 27, it has been considered one of the most destructive hurricanes of the season, devastating communities in the Southeast and killing over 200 people.

According to USA Today, since 1950, only eight hurricanes have killed over 100 people in the contiguous United States. This makes Helene one of the deadliest and most violent hurricanes in history to hit the mainland.

Communities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Kentucky were devastated by heavy rains and flooding, strong winds, and debris. Between 10 and 30 inches of rain fell in some of the hardest-hit communities. Some neighborhoods in North Carolina even disappeared under water.

However, when disaster strikes, communities come together. Nonprofit organizations and relief workers have come together to reach out and help those affected by the storm, even though the distance is hundreds of miles.

Locally, the Harrison Fire Department is collecting donations of bottled water, cleaning supplies, flashlights, baby wipes and more. Drop-off takes place on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 206 Harrison Avenue, Harrison.

Here are some organizations where New Yorkers can volunteer and donate to those most affected by Hurricane Helene.

If you know of an active organization raising donations or volunteers that is not listed, contact Alexandra Rivera, [email protected]. The list is then updated.
