Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers shot and killed a person after a chase in east Birmingham on Tuesday afternoon.

The scene is still active and no details have been released.

The ordeal apparently began with a chase that led from Interstate 20 to Messer Airport Highway.

Two accidents may have occurred during the pursuit.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was driving in the wrong direction on the I-20 exit ramp onto Messer Airport Highway while officers were still pursuing him when he wrecked his car.

The Alabama Department of Law Enforcement has been assigned to lead the investigation, which is common practice in police-involved shootings.
