Freddie Freeman stares down World Series MVP with historic dominance

Neither the Dodgers nor Freddie Freeman left much doubt in this fall classic.

After a 4-2 win over the Yankees in Game 3 on Monday night, the team is on the verge of winning the World Series and Freeman is in line for MVP honors.

Freeman hit a home run for the third straight game to lead the Dodgers’ offensive attack.

Overall, it was his fifth consecutive World Series game with a home run (set in 2021 with the Braves), tying a record set by George Springer with the Astros (2017 and ’19).

And Freeman became the first player since Barry Bonds in 2002 to hit a home run in the first three games of a World Series.

Freeman, who sprained his right ankle while trying to avoid a hit at first base on Sept. 26, was on a 17-home run-less streak heading into this series.

“Those days off (last week) were huge for me,” Freeman said, referring to the five-day gap between the NLCS and the World Series. “I sprained my ankle in a place where after every single game it’s not as bad as before. … So I think days off when you’re injured kind of helps. I got my ankle in a place where I could work on my swing and I put it in a good position in this series.”

With Shohei Ohtani leading off the game and Mookie Betts retired, Freeman fell behind in the count, 2-1, to Clarke Schmidt before smashing a cutter into the seats in right field.

Freeman’s defining moment in the series came in Game 1 on Friday when he launched a walk-off grand slam off Nestor Cortes in the 10th inning.

Freeman, playing on the Gimpy Ankle, brought back memories of Kirk Gibson’s miraculous home run that sank the A’s in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Freeman returned in Game 2 for a fourth-inning home run against Carlos Rodon.

The Dodgers weren’t all Freeman that night, but his home run got the team on the right track.

In the third inning, Tommy Edman drew a leadoff walk against Schmidt and Betts delivered an RBI single that put the Yankees in a 3-0 hole.

In the sixth, Gavin Lux was bludgeoned and stole second before Kiké Hernandez’s RBI single gave the Dodgers a four-run lead.

“We know what’s at stake (Tuesday),” Freeman said. “We have a chance to become champions and we know their boys. They have nothing to lose and will do everything they can.”

Freeman’s outburst in the last three games all but ensures that the Dodgers will have the National League MVP (Ohtani) and the World Series MVP (Freeman).

But Freeman is more focused on the World Series trophy.

“I really just want to hoist this trophy,” he said. “I don’t care how this happens. I don’t care if I go 0-for-the-next-70 with 70 strikeouts, as long as we win, that’s all I care about.”
