Fort Worth police officer struck and killed by truck at accident scene – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Fort Worth police officer was struck and killed at the scene of an accident on Interstate 35W and Sycamore School Road Monday morning.

While working at the scene, Sergeant Billy Randolph was struck by a vehicle that drove through the accident scene at approximately 5:38 a.m.

Sergeant Randolph was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, FWPD said.

“Sergent Randolph was with the department for 30 years, I’ve been here for 24 years and I don’t know the department without him,” said Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes. “Every day from now on will be hard as we mourn the loss of one of our brothers.”

Officers lined up along the driveway and saluted as a police honor guard escorted Randolph’s body from JPS Hospital to the Tarrant County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred when a semi-truck exited southbound I-35W onto Sycamore School Road around 2:30 a.m. and struck the guardrail. The vehicle then caught fire and leaked fuel, closing the exit ramp and entrance road, according to a Fort Worth police report.

According to police, Sergeant Randolph was working at the scene of the accident while standing on the exit ramp from I-35W to Sycamore School Road when a driver went the wrong way up the exit ramp and struck Randolph.

During a press conference after the accident, Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said the driver who struck Sergeant Randolph was taken into custody.

The driver, now identified as 25-year-old De Aujalae Evans of Fort Worth, was charged with manslaughter while intoxicated causing the death of a police officer or firefighter.

Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department held a press conference regarding an officer who was struck and killed at the scene of an accident Monday morning.

I-35 and the service road will be closed until further notice while authorities clean up the accident scene and conduct the subsequent investigation.

A temporary memorial to Randolph was erected in front of the Fort Worth Police Department’s South Patrol Division headquarters on Risinger Road.
