Former UT student arrested months after dead baby found in trash can on campus

A 19-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of a baby found on the University of Tampa campus last spring.

Brianna Moore was arrested Friday in Mississippi and charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter of a child, child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury, failure to report death and unlawful storage of human remains.

According to the Hillsborough County District Attorney’s Office, Moore’s roommates reported hearing a baby crying and finding blood in their shared bathroom at McKay Hall on April 27.

They called University of Tampa campus security, which sent an ambulance to check on Moore. The suspect denied being pregnant and told an officer the blood in the bathroom was from her period.

The next day, Moore’s roommates found a bloody towel in the suspect’s trash can and called police again, according to the Hillsborough County prosecutor.

Authorities said they found the dead newborn hidden in a towel.

When Tampa police interviewed Moore that day, she admitted delivering the baby in the bathroom and holding him close until she stopped crying.

She told investigators she put the baby in a towel and threw it in the trash can.

An autopsy revealed the child had multiple broken ribs along the spine and bleeding in the lungs. The coroner determined that the cause of death was asphyxia due to compression of the upper body and that the manner of death was homicide.

“It breaks my heart to know that if this woman had alerted authorities that she needed help, this little girl could still be alive today. Instead, she took actions that directly led to the death of her newborn baby. This is a difficult and complex case to prosecute, and our community must continue to educate women about the many resources available to them in situations like this. This baby’s death was preventable,” said Hillsborough District Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Moore is currently being held in the Lauderdale County (MS) Jail awaiting extradition to Tampa.

Florida lawmakers recently expanded the state’s safe haven laws in July to allow parents to surrender unwanted newborns anonymously and without questions up to 30 days after birth. A parent who has just given birth can hand their child over to medical staff at a hospital or fire station.
