Former Oilers goalie takes indefinite leave of absence

EDMONTON – It’s a time for change.

The Edmonton Oilers have seen quite a bit of change this offseason. A new GM in Stan Bowman, a few new faces on the team in Jeff Skinner and Ty Emberson, and a new contract for one Leon Draisaitl.

Changes are also happening outside the Oilers bubble. A big change was the Detroit Red Wings offering former Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell a contract after he was bought out.

Another layer to the story has emerged.

The NHL and NHLPA jointly announced today that current Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell “will be unavailable to his club indefinitely while under the care of the NHL and NHLPA’s Player Assistance Program.”

It’s good to see Campbell realizing he needs help and taking big steps to get that help. Hopefully he can find the help he needs to be a healthy and whole person.

Campbell struggled with the Oilers last year. In five games, he had a 1-4-1 record, a 4.50 goals against average (GAA) and a save percentage (SV%) of 0.873.

He found some success in the AHL. Campbell played 33 games for the Bakersfield Condors. In those games, he had a record of 18-13-1, a GAA of 2.63 and a SV% of .918.

On July 1, he signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Red Wings. I wish Campbell all the best.
