Former Michigan analyst Stalions fails in debut as interim high school coach

Connor Stalions, the analyst and alleged mastermind of Michigan’s sign-stealing operation, is now the high school’s interim coach.

Stalions filled in for Mumford head coach William McMichael, who recently suffered a “mild stroke,” Jay Alexander, executive director of athletics for the Detroit Public Schools Community District, confirmed to ESPN.

The Stalions coaches’ first game was Friday night. Mumford lost to Flint Hamady 60-0, dropping to 0-2 on the season.

“I came to Mumford because I wanted to help turn the culture around,” Stalions told The Detroit News after the game. “They’re not used to winning, and I wanted to show these guys what it actually takes to win, because eventually they’re going to win, and that’s more satisfying to me than going to a program that’s already winning.”

“I’d rather have 15 guys who love the process of football than 30 guys who are kind of half in and half out because they’re pushing back the 15 guys who are in.”

McMichael was hired as his defensive coordinator at the Detroit school during his first season with Mumford Stalions.

“He may be the most hated man in college football, but the coaches and kids at Mumford High School love him,” McMichael told ESPN last month.

In 2022, Michigan hired Stalions, a lifelong Wolverines fan and retired United States Marine Corps captain, as an analyst. Stalions is the alleged leader of a large-scale sign-stealing operation. He is accused of sending people out to scout the Wolverines’ future opponents, including recording game signals from the teams’ sidelines. The NCAA sent Michigan a notice last month about allegations of prohibited off-campus signal-stealing.

Stalions told NCAA investigators that he never participated in any enhanced in-person scouting and did not purchase tickets for others to attend games of the Wolverines’ future opponents and record their signals. Stalions made those claims in April during a video interview with NCAA investigators, excerpts from which were included in the new Netflix documentary “Sign Stealer,” released last month.

Stalions was suspended with pay on October 20 pending the outcome of Michigan’s internal investigation and resigned on November 3.

The Big Ten suspended coach Jim Harbaugh for his team’s final three games of the 2023 regular season because his program allegedly violated the league’s sportsmanship rules. The Wolverines still won the national championship.
