Former Goldman Sachs technology chief leaves electronic trading platform to become CTO of Drax

Electronic trading platform MarketAxxess has had a solid start to 2024, reporting a 10% year-on-year increase in revenue in the last quarter, yet it has just lost one of its most experienced technicians.

Tim Hooley, MarketAxxess’s chief technology officer for EMEA and APAC, has left the company to become CTO of buy-side agency broker JB Drax HonorĂ©. He spent the last four years at the firm and prior to that spent two years at open source software provider Red Hat.

Hooley is best known, however, for his 22-year tenure at Goldman Sachs, leading research and sales technology with a focus on digital transformation, marketing, analytics and operations. He joined the bank in 1996 from technology consultancy Accenture and was promoted to managing director in 2013.

A highlight of his time at the bank was leading the first IT apprenticeship programme; Hooley himself spent four years as an apprentice with the construction company JCB.

Hooley is Drax’s only significant technology hire of the year. A non-technical senior hire due to join in 2024 is Phil Hirst, former chief financial officer of UK investment fintech firm Capital.com, who joins as the group’s financial controller.
