Forestry service busy with series of small fires

Below is a catalog of all lightning-caused fires that have broken out in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. These fires, despite their small size, pose a huge challenge.

Cle Elum Ranger District

  • Daniel Ridge Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; paratroopers actively fighting the fire
  • Cherry Garcia Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; fully contained
  • Waptus Fire; 1 acre; fully contained
  • Davis Peak Fire; 1 acre in size; abseilers actively fighting the fire
  • Skeeter Creek Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; fully contained
  • Stave Creek Fire; five to ten acres in size; crews and shovelers are actively fighting the fire
  • Thomas Mountain Fire; five to ten hectares in size; according to the Forest Service,
  • “Abseilers and a rescue team were sent into the fire. Helicopters were able to control the spread of the fire to the west on Saturday. In the last 24 hours there have been only minimal expansions in the area.”

Wenatchee River Ranger District

  • Little Wenatchee Fire; two to three acres in size; located 21 miles northwest of Plain
  • Tip Top Mountain Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; fully contained and in patrol status
  • Black Pine Fire; three-quarters of an acre in size; abseilers actively tending the fire
  • Incident #590; one third of an acre in size; crews are unable to control the fire due to location (“Between Mount David and Mount Mastiff on a 150-200% steep slope”).
  • Lichtenwasser Lake Fire; one-tenth of an acre; 100% covered

Chelan Ranger District

  • Unnamed fire in Safety Harbor area near Chelan; two acres in size; same crews that worked on the Pioneer Fire are battling this fire

Naches Ranger District

  • Cub Creek Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; fully contained and controlled

Methow Ranger District

  • Fox Peak Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; fully contained and controlled
  • Lookout Fire; one-tenth of an acre in size; was called

The forestry service issues further warnings.

“Recreation enthusiasts are reminded that campfire bans are in effect throughout the forest. Please be very cautious with any activities that could create sparks that could ignite a wildfire. Firefighting resources are scarce due to the many wildfires in the West. Please do not contribute to human-caused wildfires.”

“Recreationalists are urged to stay away from aerial resources such as helicopters and bucket wheel excavators and instead use local lakes and rivers as a water source for firefighting.”
