Forest fire near Chelan leads to evacuations and state mobilization

CHELAN – A rapidly spreading wildfire near Chelan has forced evacuations and the mobilization of state firefighters. The fire threatens homes, infrastructure and agricultural land near the city.

The Stayman Fire, which broke out Tuesday afternoon, has expanded to an estimated 400 acres. It is burning through brush and grass, moving quickly uphill and has reached the top of a nearby ridge.

Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state fire resources at 5 p.m. following a request from Chelan County Fire District 7 Chief Brandon Asher. The State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray was partially activated to coordinate relief efforts.

Evacuation orders have been issued in several areas, including Hawks Meadow Road, Chukar Run, Dove Hollow Road, Big Sage Lane, Hawks Ridge Road, Columbia Rim Road, Downie Canyon Road, Chelan Butte, Little Butte and Butte Ranch Road. Residents have been instructed to leave the areas immediately.

In addition, a Level 1 Fire Warning with a possible hazard has been issued for Chelan, Waterslide Drive and surrounding areas.

An evacuation center has been set up at the United Methodist Church in Chelan to house displaced residents.

The fire department has requested five teams to assist with containment measures. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

Local authorities urge the population to stay informed through official channels and to comply with all evacuation orders.

While firefighters attempt to contain the fire, the situation remains dynamic and may change depending on the fire’s progression and weather conditions.
